Saving Money the Congressional Way

Saving Money the Congressional Way

As the US Senate wraps up work on their version of the “pork laden” Federal stimulus bill, a group of moderate (aka “big spending”) Republicans and conservative (aka “we spend less than liberals”) Democrats met to recommend cuts on the package.   So what does saving money look like in Congress?

US government proposed spending in Federal Stimulus that was partially cut:

• $3.5 billion for energy-efficient federal buildings (original bill $7 billion)

• $75 million from Smithsonian (original bill $150 million)

• $200 million from Environmental Protection Agency Superfund (original bill $800 million)

• $100 million from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (original bill $427 million)

• $100 million from law enforcement wireless (original bill $200 million)

• $300 million from federal fleet of hybrid vehicles (original bill $600 million)

• $100 million from FBI construction (original bill $400 million)

For a complete PDF of the Nelson/Collins Stimulus recommendation (that still recommends spending more money than the US house version), go to the Senate Conservative Fund http://senateconservatives.com   and click on the Nelson-Collins Stimulus Summary.   The amounts of pork spending under the guise of creating jobs and jumpstarting the US economy will overwhelm the average common sense US taxpayer.    Or I forgot, less and less Americans actually will pay taxes under the Obama tax plans, so I guess government spending and the resulting taxes don’t impact the average American.   We save the tax increases for the rich!

Most Americans just don’t spend money at all, if they are trying to cut costs and save money.   As for jumpstarting the economy, a focus on tax cuts for small business, reductions in capital gains tax rates for investors and some actual infrastructure projects would go much farther that the “Porkulus Bill” in term of turning the US economy around.      Instead the Democrats in Congress and the new Democrat President are attempting to spend, then borrow, and then increase taxes on the “rich” to pay for their financial boondoggle.

For more on a conservative free market approach and to see a financial reality check, click through the CATO Institute   www.cato.org/fiscalreality    While the legacy media, main stream Democrats, the left coast and east coast elite are pushing the financially irresponsible Federal Stimulus package, the rest of America is wondering what are these Congressional big spenders are thinking?      It is simple: The majority of the Congress and the President think that big government and massive spending is the answer.     However a majority of Americans do not support the Democrat Federal stimulus package.   Popular support is down at 37% approval, according the Rasmussen Reports    www.rasmussenreports.com      What will the US taxpayers say to their US Congressmen and US Senators when they get home to defend the Porkulus Package?      Time will tell.

Keeping the Press Happy

Keeping the Press Happy

As posted in an earlier Four Corners Media blog (January 12th), the love affair with the legacy media and the Obama “spin the news” team was bound to be tested.    The event that had White House orchestrated media control was the reenactment of the President’s swearing in.   Only a selected few in the media attended, and no live video or audio was allowed from the press pool.    The White House press corps membership is composed of the elite reporters of the Legacy Media, many of them being groomed for featured news anchor jobs or new programs by their news organizations.www.whitehousepresscorps.org

You’ll note that the WHPC site has a window “Obama Administration Twitter Coverage” built into the lower part of the home page.

Here is the view from the Politico  www.politico.com  on the media frustration with team Obama this first week in office.

A growing media frustration with Barack Obama’s team spilled into the open at Thursday’s briefing, with reporters accusing the White House of stifling access to his oath re-do and giving Obama’s first interview as president to a multi-million dollar inauguration sponsor.

Veteran CBS newsman Bill Plante was one of the most vocal critics, questioning the White House’s handling of Wednesday night’s second swearing in – which was covered by just a four-reporter print pool that didn’t include a news photographer or TV correspondent.

He also asked new press secretary Robert Gibbs why ABC, which paid millions to host the DC Neighborhood Ball, was granted the only inauguration day interview with President Obama – a move he equated to “pay to play.”

“We have a tradition here of covering the president,” said Plante, who is covering his fourth administration.

Later in the day, the Obama team was scrambling to get the dance steps right with the White House press corps.   The Prez himself made a surprise visit to the cramped rooms the media works out of reporting on the White House beat.

President Obama made a surprise visit to the White House press corps Thursday night, but got agitated when he was faced with a substantive question.

Asked how he could reconcile a strict ban on lobbyists in his administration with a Deputy Defense Secretary nominee who lobbied for Raytheon, Obama interrupted with a knowing smile on his face.

"Ahh, see," he said, "I came down here to visit. See this is what happens. I can't end up visiting with you guys and shaking hands if I'm going to get grilled every time I come down here."
   www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/17831.html

Welcome to Washington DC and your new role as the President of the United States.   Team Obama is trying to make the shift from an image building campaign and sanitized press relationship to the rough and tumble of a national press corps looking for stories, not photo ops.  If you watched or heard former President Bush’s last news conference, these legacy media reporters play for keeps.   And Team Obama is being welcomed into their world.

It is a dance, between the media (4th estate) and the President (POTUS 44) that is being ironed out and played out in the public eye.  Historically, the POTUS and the White House Press Corps have had hot and cold relationships.   Each president handles the press differently, including setting up an Office of the Press Secretary that will conduct daily briefings with the media.   But every reporter is at the White House to ask questions of the President.    That is when the real news happens.

Obma & the Scripted Media

Obama and the Scripted Media:

From the media blog on National Review On-Line:

'[We] Don't Even Bother Raising Our Hands Any More...'  [Guy Benson, January 12th post http://media.nationalreview.com/

As I watched President Bush's final tango with reporters this morning, I was reminded of how Chicago Sun-Times www.suntimes.com columnist Carol Marin described President-elect Obama's press conferences thus far:

"As ferociously as we march like villagers with torches against Blagojevich [Governor of Illinois, under Federal indictment], we have been, in the true spirit of the Bizarro universe, the polar opposite with the president-elect. Deferential, eager to please, prepared to keep a careful distance.            The Obama news conferences tell that story, making one yearn for the return of the always-irritating Sam Donaldson to awaken the slumbering press to the notion that decorum isn't all it's cracked up to be. The press corps, most of us, don't even bother raising our hands any more to ask questions because Obama always has before him a list of correspondents who've been advised they will be called upon that day."   Carol Marin, Sun Times

How long will the Obama-friendly press corps, no matter how "deferential" and "eager to please," tolerate such tight management?    (Asked by Guy Benson on his NRO blog)

This is a good question?    As I listened to the final Bush press conference on Sirius XM radio (Bloomberg channel 129 on XM), it was clear that the sitting President Bush was calling on members of the “unfriendly to Bush press corps” as they raised their hands.   And the questions pushed the soon to be former president to ‘admit mistakes’ and ‘apologize to the American people’.     Used to the unfriendly press, the Republican president fired away at his media critics in his usual folksy matter.   However, on some issues, such as the gravity of the Office of the President and keeping the American homeland safe, President Bush didn’t mince words in the face of his media critics.

So how will the White House press corps treat President Obama next week, when it is his turn to deal with the 4th estate?   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Estate     Who will be first to ask questions, along the lines of the types of questions that President Bush faced in his last press conference?     At some point, the Obama friendly press will have to choose: Should we continued the well scripted public relations campaign for Team Obama, or should we actually exercise our obligation to report the news as independent members of the press?

How the Legacy media answers this question will determine their long-term credibility as the 4th estate in American politics and reporting.

Voters Support Traditional Marriage

In California, Proposition 8 was passed, despite an overwhelming “elite class” campaign to say “No” on Prop 8.  At the end of the voting, 52.5 percent of those casting ballots on Tuesday voted for the measure. Records show that 47.5 percent voted against the measure. Simply put, Proposition 8 asked California voters to affirm that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California" - a concept that voters previously backed when they approved Proposition 22 in 2000. California voters adopted the measure (Prop 22) on March 7, 2000 with 61.4% approval and 38.6% against. This time around, Proposition 8 overturns a May 2008 California Supreme Court decision legalizing gay nuptials and rewrites the state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Exit poll data in California showed seven in 10 black voters and more than half of Latino voters backed the ballot initiative, while whites and Asians were split. Though blacks and Latinos combined make up less than one-third of California's electorate, their opposition to same-sex marriage appeared to tip the balance. Both groups decisively backed President-Elect Obama, regardless of their position on the initiative.

According to the liberal web site Huffington Post, in a blogger post by Raymond Leon Roker, the campaign to support “Yes on 8” was effective, “So who did [support Yes on 8]? For starters, the churches, religious leaders and advocacy groups in support of 8 were a very formidable force. Surveys showed religion played a major role in voter's decisions. Even “No on 8” supporters have admitted that their camp was too complacent, arrogant and far to unorganized.”  Mr. Roker, an African American, who indicated that he voted “No on 8” despite some misgiving, felt that the overwhelming African American support was mischaracterized by opponents of Proposition 8, “I've read several editorials already about how the ungrateful blacks betrayed gays right after America gave them their first president…(and that is) a gross oversimplification of what happened.” [Quoted from Huffington Post  www.huffingtonpost.com , November 7, 2008]

Now that Proposition 8 passed in California, those that demand special rights (for gays) are trampling on the rights of their fellow citizens.    According the Yes on 8 advocacy web site  www.protectmarriage.com , “since Proposition 8’s victory, a series of protests against churches, small businesses and individual supporters of traditional marriage have taken place in cities across the state.  Tragically, some opponents of Proposition 8 who claim to cherish tolerance and civil rights are unabashedly trampling on the rights of others. Protests and boycotts have taken place against a Hispanic restaurant owner in Los Angeles, African American religious leaders in the Bay Area, and a musical theater director in Sacramento, among many others.” November 12, 2008

As both sides battled to influence the vote on Proposition 8, campaign finance records show that total contributions for and against the measure have surpassed $70 million, which set a record in campaign spending on a social issue ballot initiative.  Opinion polls indicated that the Proposition 8 vote would be close, as voters still favor the traditional definition of marriage, 49 to 47 percent, according to the most recent Public Policy Institute of California poll.  In the end, the Proposition 8 passed with enough support, from a diverse group of “Yes on 8” advocates.

Former California governor and career politician Jerry Brown, prior to the vote in November 2008, aided opponents of Proposition 8.   He is now serving as the Attorney General in California.    As a “lifer Democrat”, he was able to help the “No on 8” advocates by changing the Proposition 8 ballot title.  The proponents' original title for Prop. 8 was "Limit on Marriage." What voters saw on their California ballot pamphlet, thanks to career politician Brown, was that Proposition 8 "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry."   Advocates of the “Yes on 8” went to the California Supreme Court to keep the original title.    The same California Supreme court that sought to overturn the will of the people (in 2000, and now in 2008) ruled in favor of Brown’s rewording of the title language.

So despite the huge amounts of money spent on both sides, and the established California (liberal Democrat) leadership and their allies pushing “No on 8”, it passed as a result of a strong grassroots campaign by the Protect Marriage coalition.  The “Yes on 8” advocates had significant support, “This victory would not have been possible without the support of our 70,000 contributors and over 100,000 dedicated volunteers. It was accomplished with the strong participation of about 80% of California voters, or nearly 14 million people participating in this expression of the People’s will” according to the www.protectmarriage.com  web site news release of November 12, 2008.

Now that the ruling of a group of activist California judges was overturned, it is worthwhile to reflect on the significance of what the Protect Marriage coalition achieved in November 2008. The people of California did not do anything rash or drastic in their vote of support. The majority of voters simply decided to enshrine the definition of marriage as one man and one woman in the California state constitution.   At this point, 30 ballot issues defining marriage as between a man and a women have passed in a number of states in the US.   And while the pro-gay marriage activists and their allies have put their considerable political weight, aided the Legacy media, to overturn traditional marriage, their efforts have not been supported by a majority of voters.     And when activists’ judges attempt to overrule the people or their legislatures, the voters have risen up to reverse these actions in most cases.  Such is the case of America throughout the States, as the US is a country built on the traditions of marriage, family and the right to vote.   Even if that means that a few overreaching judges, and their “courts first arrogance, the people second” are overruled in the process of ballot elections that express the will of the people.

Sarah Palin Connects with America 10.03.08

The Main Stream Media (MSM) doesn’t get it.  While they cannot stand Sarah Palin, the American heartland and working people in the US are liking the Governor from Alaska.  As Sarah Palin stepped onto the national stage for the VP debate, the MSM and her critics warned America that she just wasn’t ready for prime time.  The legacy media, ABC News and CBS News took their turns with pre-debate “interviews” designed to dismiss and cripple Governor Palin as a serious Vice Presidential candidate.   Then the Obama campaign played the “she is a great debater” card, thinking that they could use elevated expectations to diminish her performance.  And Joe Biden, while well prepared and coached, attempted to use his 36 years of experience in the US Senate to overwhelm the American public with his knowledge and unwavering support of Barack Obama.    Governor Palin simply asked Senator Biden if she could call him Joe, and proceeded to speak directly to the American people.    In Governor Palin’s own words: “I may not answer the question the way the moderator or you want, but I’m going to answer and talk straight to the American people.”

Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin http://michellemalkin.com/ headlined her blog:  Sarah Rocks:  Sarah Palin is the real deal. Five weeks on the campaign trail, thrust onto the national stage, she rocked tonight’s debate.  She was warm, fresh, funny, confident, energetic, personable, relentless, and on message. She roasted Obama’s flip-flops on the surge and tea-with-dictators declarations, dinged Biden’s bash-Bush rhetoric, challenged the blame-America defeatism of the Left, and exuded the sunny optimism that energized the base in the first place.

Meanwhile, back at the legacy media “round table” on CNN on Thursday night, the talking heads spent most of their time trying to explain why Senator Joe Biden won the night, and while attempting to dismiss Governor Palin’s performance.    For the MSM, Sarah Palin is so far outside their “Obama all the time” script, that they miss the obvious: that most Americans in the middle and in the heartland (and Alaska) like Sarah Palin.  CNN’s own poll showed that Palin was more likeable (54%) that Biden (36%).    However their media graphic focused on their biased poll that said Biden did the best job (51%) as compared to Palin (35%).

Sarah took the questions as Gwen Ifill (referred to as “Age of Obama” by journalist and media blogger Michele Malkin) served them up to the VP candidates.   Governor Palin used a direct approach, straight forward answers and ability to connect with the TV audience.  This was in contrast to Senator Biden’s left leaning rehearsed lines and Bush-bashing responses.   Sure, Senator Biden’s 35-year history and experince in the US Senate showed in the VP debate.   As a 6-term Washington insider, he should know the topics.   But Governor Palin, in a classic line said, “Say it ain’t, Joe!” You did it again. Looking backwards again!   Sarah Palin was alive, ready to go and gave the senior Senator from Delaware all that he could handle.

My guess is that the Obama campaign is desperately trying to spin the VP debate as a win.  The MSM is doing all they can to help.  Meanwhile, the American people are wondering, “Why is this Alaskan Governor causing such heartburn and angst with the MSM, the Washington elite and Hollywood left?”  What a difference straight talk to the American people can make.    Harry Truman and Ronald Regan demonstrated that.  While Sarah Palin is only the #2 on the ticket, her support could make the difference for John McCain this race for President.
